Analyze the article Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Analyze the article - Essay Example A drop in the stock market has increased adverse selection and moral hazards because it has resulted in a weakening of the market value of firms' net worth, so lenders are less eager to lend, as deficits from loans are likely to be acute. This decline in lending has then triggered investment and aggregate yield to decline. Also, the waning corporate net worth has increased moral hazard inducements for companies to make risky investments because they now have less to lose. Again this increase in moral hazard makes lending less attractive. The failure of financial institutions in the mortgage debacle, together with the drop in the stock market has led to uncertainty in financial markets. It is more difficult to determine good from bad credit, which again has resulted to a fall in lending, investment and cumulative activity. The source of the current bank panic therefore, is asymmetric information. The result is that loan funds have been reduced and the price of intermediation has risen, which has caused a drop in investment and a decline in aggregate economic activity (Mishkin).

Music and Movement (one full page reflection) Essay

Music and Movement (one full page reflection) - Essay Example The transition from static to dynamic balance should be gradual. Likewise, the transition from independent balancing to balancing with objects should be staged. Once a child has gained perfection in stationary balance, only then he/she should be made to practice balancing with rubber rings. Finally, practices with unstable equipments should commence. To make the session all the more interesting for the children, songs with good beat must be played. Songs that qualify include but are not limited to Everybody Dance, I’m a Little Tea Pot and Incy Wincy Spider. The child’s skill should be judged by testing his/her balancing on different levels, places and positions. Music and movement is a wonderful session for the cognitive, social, emotional and physical development of children. This activity â€Å"incorporates many basic math skills, including matching and comparing; patterning and sequencing; and counting and addition. When you add moving to the beat, you involve both body and mind† (Church, 2001). Such exercise helps the brain grow. Movement and learning are processes together in the same part of the brain. It increases the flow of blood and oxygenates the brain. This, in turn, enlightens the mood and makes an individual agile and active and enhances his/her social, emotional, physical and cognitive

Fast food Essay Example for Free

Fast food Essay Remember how simple it was to pull up to the drive through and tell the little speaker box what combo you wanted? You weren’t ashamed of asking for large fries and a chocolate milkshake because your stomach can handle anything you decide to digest. The salty golden arches crunched as you took a bite, the juicy double cheeseburger melted in your mouth or the sweet tea quenched your thirst and the hot fudge sundae sent you on a sugar rush. The teenage years were carefree because there was no distinction between healthy and life threatening when it came to choosing where to eat during lunch break. Unfortunately, your figure cannot handle careless food decisions anymore. Now you need to drive past that McDonald’s and find the nearest salad bar. Fast food is not your friend; it’s your enemy. Looking back you must wonder why you thought greasy cheeseburgers and fried chicken were the ideal meal; they certainly did not do any good for your body. Yes it was a quick and easy way to get food but that was during the years you stayed active. As a woman well over her thirties, you are smart enough to know that you don’t have the same metabolism as any eighteen-year-old girl. Face it, you are no longer that little girl who could devour her way through all you can eat buffets and midnight snacks. You are a mother who may have gained a few pounds here and there; nevertheless, you are not allowed to let yourself go. More importantly, do not feed yourself straight into a heart attack because you divert to fast food for dinner. A meat patty is made from the unhealthy parts of the beef. White bread will only make you want to eat again in a couple hours. The oil used to make your favorite value menu snack can eventually clog up your arteries if eaten excessively. Why risk your life for chicken nuggets that never look as good as the ones on the TV commercials? Don’t forget that you are no longer thinking of yourself, you have a husband and children. Are those deep fried onion rings really worth thousands of dollars toward hospital bills and the thought of your family losing its primary caretaker? Now you can pull up to the drive through teller and ask the little speaker box if it knows where the nearest Subway is because you have conquered your need for unhealthy fast food. Don’t let the golden arches confuse you, they are swords to the stomach and the milkshakes will only give you brain freezes. Stay away from that double cheeseburger because it is soaked in oil that leads to high cholesterol and heartburn. Don’t give in to the artificial sweeteners and chocolate because they satisfy you when you have them, but will only make you crash harder. You are stronger than any of the unhealthy products fast food throws your way. If you stay away from them all together, you will no longer have to worry about fast food taking you down. You will come out well figured, healthy, and victorious.

Technology in Healthcare: Disinfecting Lightbulb

Technology in Healthcare: Disinfecting Lightbulb Tracy Topping Paula Gale Technology in Health Care Virtual Reality. Artificial Intelligence. Mechanical limbs. This sounds like the making of a Sci-Fi movie, but this is actually just a few of the latest technologies in health care. We are inundated with technology. Its taking over the way we interact with each other and function every day. The health care industry is making great strides in incorporating technology into the world of health care and has benefited greatly from innovative technology. One technology that I believe will be extremely beneficial to medical facilities and their patients is the disinfecting lightbulb. Hospitals are full of germs and bacteria. These can be harmful to many patients, especially to those who already have a compromised immune system. According to the United States Centre for Disease Control, nearly 1 in every 25 hospital patients contract an infection while in a medical setting and this is responsible for nearly 100,000 deaths a year. One company, Indigo-Clean has developed an indigo coloured lightbulb that continuously disinfects the environment and decreases the spread of infection. This light is not harmful to humans and is safe for continuous use in any type of medical setting. This lightbulb emits a certain frequency of light that kills dangerous bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MSRA), C. difficile and Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus almost instantaneously. The light reflects off all surfaces, penetrating harmful micro-organisms. It targets naturally occurring molecules that exist inside bacteria. The bacteria absorbs the light and then a lethal chemical reaction occurs, similar to the effects of bleach, which prevents it from re-populating the space. (http://www.indigo-clean.com/how-it-works, n.d.) Dr. Chetan Jinadatha, chief of infectious diseases at the Central Texan Veterans Health Care System, authored a study showing that combining both manual disinfection and UV light, could effectively kill between 90 and 99 percent of all aerobic bacteria in an average size hospital room. (http://www.research.va.gov/currents/spring2015/spring2015-6.cfm) By creating a much more sterile environment, this technology will improve patients recovery time and with fewer complications. It will decrease the length of a patients hospital stay and therefore decrease the cost to the hospital. Another fascinating technology that is available is the bionic eye. Nano Retina and Second Sight have developed a microchip that can restore sight to people who with little or no remaining functional vision to due to retinal degenerative diseases. This microchip implant will have a tremendous impact on the patients that receive it. It will give patients the freedom to continue their daily activities and gives them more confidence and dignity. It will also cut down on the number of surgeries that are performed trying to correct their vision. This technology is of personal interest to me. My mom has a retinal degenerative disease. Her diminished eyesight has limited her daily lifestyle. She can no longer drive, walk without assistance, read or even peel potatoes. She has undergone a number of surgeries in an attempt to increase her vision, but none have been successful. This technology may be an option for her if she meets all the criteria. The microchip is implanted just above the retina. The procedure is a minimally invasive surgery that doesnt require a hospital stay. Its done under local anesthetic and the procedure takes less than 1 hour. The microchip implant converts images captured by a miniature video camera mounted on the accompanying wireless eyeglasses into a series of small electrical pulses. Those pulses are transmitted wirelessly to the implant. The pulses stimulate the retinas remaining cells, resulting in the perception of patterns of light in the brain. The patient then learns to interpret these visual patterns, thereby regaining some visual function. The accompanying wireless eyeglasses communicate with the implant and allow the patient to fine-tune different light setting at a push of a button. (http://www.nano-retina.com/) (http://www.secondsight.com/g-the-argus-ii-prosthesis-system-pf-en.html, n.d.) Robotic- assisted surgeries are fairly new in Canada. Only a small number of hospitals in Canada are using this technology. It costs approximately 2.8 million dollars to purchase and $180,000 to maintain annually. Each surgery costs roughly $5,600. The cost of Robotics is expensive. Over time hospitals are hoping to offset these expensive costs with the money saved from shorter surgeries and hospital stays. There are many benefits to using robotics in surgery. It allows the surgeon to perform more precise, more complex and delicate surgeries with minimal invasion. It also gives the surgeon better dexterity and the ability to reach places within the body that previously had not been possible. It also cuts down the amount of time the patient is in surgery and amount the fatigue experienced by the surgeon. Patients have less recovery time and fewer surgical complications. They experience less post-operative pain and shorter stays in the hospital. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4081240/, n.d.) Technology is continually evolving. Advances in health care technology will continue to make a remarkable impact in the way health care is delivered to patients. These technologies will reduce hospital costs and assist in better education for health care providers. Technology will also increase the level of care patients receive and better treatment options with reduced complications. Patients will live longer and healthier and arent those the goals the health care industry strives to achieve? References http://www.davincisurgery.com/. Animal Farm, 1984 Essays -- Animal Farm Essays

Animal farm and 1984 Napoleon, the leader of all the animals of the Rebellion, can be compared and contrasted with Big Brother, the leader of all the people of 1984. Both Big Brother and Napoleon show the qualities of a cruel ruler. Similar to Big Brother, Napoleon is a secretive plotter who works behind the scenes rather than openly. However, unlike Napoleon, Big Brother periodically appears on the television screen. Napoleon and Big Brother both work continually to weaken their rivals, whether it is by removing Snowball or eliminate Rutherford. Both place importance on complicated ceremonies and parades to prevent their workers from thinking about their schemes. Napoleon’s control over animal farm is not as powerful as Big Brother's control over the workers in 1984 (Oceania). In the service of their ruler, Squealer and Winston both revise history. Winston's task at the Ministry of Truth is to alter the past to suit the present. Squealer's duty is to amend the Seven Commandments also to suit the present. However, Squealer supports the views and beliefs of Napolean wheras Winston does not support the rules of Big Brother. Parson and Boxer are both characterized by their willingness to work, constantly volunteering for work whenever something needed to be done. Boxer worked constantly to build the windmill and Parson worked endlessly organizing marches and parades. Preparation for Hate Week was described a "Processions, meetings, military parades, lectures, film shows,...

Importance of Social Status in Emma and Clueless :: Austen Emma Essays

Importance of Social Status in Emma and Clueless Emma Woodhouse of the Jane Austen novel Emma, is part of the rich, upscale society of a well off village in nineteenth century England, while Cher Horowitz the main character of the movie version Clueless, lives in the upscale Beverly Hills of California. The Woodhouse family is very highly looked upon in Highbury, and Cher and her father are also viewed as the cultural elite. The abuse of power and wealth, arrogance, and a lack of acceptance all prove that the class status of these families plays a significant role in the shaping of both the novel and the video. Emma and Cher both abuse the power of wealth and become spoiled, socially dominating, and overly confident with themselves. However, they both feel very comfortable in this lifestyle because of their possessions and social status. Jane Austen secures Emma in the very first paragraph of her novel. She states, "Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to vex her" (Austen 1). Cher has everything a teenager could possibly want: her own jeep, an endless wardrobe, and amounts of money that seems to be collected from a money tree outside the backdoor. Emma's arrogance shines through when she brags that she is exceptionally skillful at matching couples. She believes that she is in control of fate and must play matchmaker in order for couples to discover their true love. Austen confirms, "The real evils indeed of Emma's situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself" (Austen 1). Although Emma is so spoiled and overbearing, she truly doesn't realize this fact. Likewise, an example of Cher's pompousness can be seen in the scene where she and Dionne are explaining to Tai how to become more popular. Cher states that she has already started to elevate her social status "due to the fact that you hang out with Dionne and I" (Clueless). Cher may be sympathetic to Tai, but she does so with conceitedness because she knows she is from a higher social class.

Hager Shipley in “The Stone Angel” Essay

In Margaret Laurence’s novel, â€Å"The Stone Angel†, Hagar Shipley is the main character. Born the daughter of Jason Currie, she is one who possesses incredible depth in character. Mingling past and present, we observe the very qualities, which sustained her and deprived her of joy such as her lack of emotional expression. As well, inheriting her father’s harsh qualities, she exhibited pride that detested weakness in any form. Despite of her negative attributes she also displayed a positive mannerism through courage. Thus, Hagar is a cold, but strong willed woman. Such qualities give us a portrait of a remarkable character. Hagar’s most noticeable characteristic was her lack of feeling and emotion. Indeed there where many situations where she could not physically express what she felt in her heart. She did not cry at the death of her son John. That night she was â€Å"transformed to stone and never wept at all (Laurence 243)†. During Marvin’s childhood, she would impatiently dismiss him due to his slowness of speech. Once when an ecstatic Marvin told Hagar that he finished his chores, Hagar bluntly sends him away saying, â€Å"I can see you’ve finished. I’ve got eyes. Get along now  ¼ (Laurence 112)†. Even as a child she was lacked emotion when she could not provide comfort to her dying brother, Daniel. Daniel needed the comfort of his mother, but for Hagar, â€Å"to play at being her – it was beyond me (Laurence 25).† Indeed, Hagar’s deficiency in feeling or expressing emotion was a visible characteristic throughout the novel. As a result of her upbringing, Hagar possesses pride that despises weakness in any form. As a young girl she displayed this trait when her dad slapped her hand, â€Å"I wouldn’t let him see me cry, I was so enraged (Laurence 9).† As previously mentioned before, Hagar could not portray her mother to comfort her dying brother. She characterized her mother as â€Å"the woman Dan was said to resemble so much and from whom he’d inherited a frailty I could not help but detest (Laurence 25).† When Hagar brought upon the subject of marriage with Bram Shipley to her father he made it clear that â€Å"there’s not a decent girl in this town would wed without her family’s consent (Laurence 49).† Hagar rebelliously responded, â€Å"It will be done by me (Laurence 49)† and eventually marries Bram. Thus, throughout the novel, Hagar’s attribute of scornful pride is evidently exhibited. In contrast to her negative character, Hagar exhibits a great deal of courage. Following Hagar’s marriage to Bram, she immediately faced the reality of the life. The next day Hagar cleaned the house inside out. â€Å"I had never scrubbed a floor in my life, but I worked that day as though I’d been driven by a whip (Laurence 52).† Hagar also had the courage to leave Bram for the sake of her children’s future. Physically, Hagar did not lack courage. At the age of 90, Hagar was able to painfully endure her journey to Shadow Point. Thus, her courageous character classifies her as a strong willed woman. There’s no question that Hagar, young or old, is a cold yet courageous woman. She was deficient in physically expressing her feelings and emotions. She also possessed an unbending pride, which despised weakness in any form. However, despite of her negative attributes she still exhibits a positive aspect through her courage. Hagar’s character has such immense depth. She may not be perfect; nevertheless she is unique.
